Santa Monica/Malibu California School Facilities Master Planning

Home / Planning / Santa Monica/Malibu California School Facilities Master Planning

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Facilities Master Plan Community Planning Project is currently underway.  Its an exciting opportunity for parents, students, educators and community members to assist in creating “outstanding learning facilities” for the Santa Monica and Malibu communities. The planning project will build upon the SMMUSD Strategic Plan of 2002, incorporating the seven initiatives for creating classrooms of the future to produce a Facilities Master Plan. This master plan will guide District officials by examining immediate needs and presenting long-term strategies for improving district facilities.

To create this plan, the SMMUSD contracted the team of Concordia LLC, Harley Ellis Devereaux, and Sidewalk Studio to facilitate a community-wide participatory planning process and assess the school facilities. The planning and assessment will take place over the course of six months and will involve four community-wide planning committee meetings. The project began in January 2006 with a symposium that brought together national leaders in education facility design and programming to share best practices and current trends within their fields. All community members were invited to participate in the symposium. A Community Planning Committee (CPC) comprised of all key constituencies is being recruited to participate in the four planning meetings.
