DESIGN STATEMENT: 900 CAMP STREET/CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
The design of the new 900 Camp Street building and Contemporary Arts Center involved a high degree of teamwork and collaboration, including cooperation among the CAC staff and local artists during the design process, and a continuing interchange with the building contractor and craftsmen whose technical skills and creativity contributed greatly to the success of the final design. An integral part of the collaborative effort was a series of works executed by ten sculptors who participated in the design of architectural elements, such as a freestanding elevator shaft, a decorative ceiling structure, a reception desk, wall sconces, a communications center, a donor recognition room, and a bookstore/cafe'.
Even though architecture is by definition a team effort, the 900 Camp Street/Contemporary Arts Center project represents a process involving a high degree of creative collaboration throughout the design and construction process. The result is an architectural assemblage representing a harmonious combination of individual personalities, creative talents and community spirit.
