What If
What If, a report written in 1999 by Steven Bingler for New Schools, Better Neighborhoods in Los Angeles, was underwritten by the James Irvine Foundation’s Sustainable Communities Program. New Schools Better Neighborhoods is a smart growth advocacy organization that was “formed both to advocate for a vision of public facilities, most especially schools, as vital community centers, and to assist families and neighborhoods in creating built models of community centered learning centers.” In 1999, NSBN hosted a two day symposium at the Getty Center that brought together leading thinkers to discuss schools as centers of their communities. What If documents the ideas generated at this symposium.
