The Bakery Apartments

New Orleans, LA
1992

The Bakery building, originally constructed in 1920 as the Consumer’s Biscuit Company factory, is located in the historic Warehouse District. This area of New Orleans dramatically changed from industrial use into a neighborhood of apartments, restaurants, professional offices and art galleries.

The renovation transformed the factory into 72 residential units with a large sunlit central atrium, cabana and pool. Original brick baking ovens were converted into penthouse apartments and structural wooden beams and columns became exposed in the atrium, surrounded by a series of angular bay windows which face west for afternoon sunshine. Simple, modern lines of the design reference the building’s former industrial, utilitarian use.
